Hi, we are having a discussion on a mad max webpge over what exact model the nightriders monaro was. Many have suggested it was an LS HQ however it had a base dash and single headlights.

I thought it woud be best to go to the people who would know.

Any help would be appreciated.

I'll have a go...

Single headlight front = Monaro; Monaro GTS; or GTS350. (not LS).
Base dash (Kingwsood? Fuel + Speedo only, black facia) = base Monaro.
White indicators & parking lights in the front bumper bar = 1971 / 1972 model.

.. if it's a '71/'72 model, it looks like Antique Brown trim (code 19X)

The dashboard pic confirms it as a base Monaro; this one has a black Belmont / Kingswood facia around the gauges and a "MONARO" badge; LS has woodgrain facia and "MONARO LS" badge.


The base HQ Monaro was available with a choice of 173 or 202 cubic inch 6 cylinder motors; or 253 or 308 ci V8 motors.

Obviously, Max, this is fitted with the smallest (173ci 6 cyl), otherwise you wouldn't have got that close to the Knightrider in that yellow heap of #@%$

I should mention that the GTS dashboard is different again; the GTS facia has a "machine-turned" finish (fishscale?) and there would be a small temp and battery gauge on the top right where the Monaro badge is on this one.

(I mis-spelt Nightrider in the previous post - sorry!)

Loved the scene where the Night rider HQ is shown from the rear with a sparker Hanging out of the exhaust pipe - just before it slamming into the truck .
The scene cuts to the 44 gallon drums exploding in the air after inpact.

AHH .. Oh well back to work now !

Here is some trivia for you, for that scene they removed the engine and straped a solid fuel rocket to the Monaro, the scene wasnt sped up! The car was meant to go under the truck but swerved when the guide wire on one side failed due to the pressure of the rocket

Even though it pre-dates that yellow thing, the Nightrider has "a big coil spring over each wheel, improving ride softness, passenger compartment quiet, conering and handling, reducing axle-hop under severe power and braking conditions"!!

On the other hand, your car, Max, has rear "leaf" springs which were invented around 1423....
